Minoans and Mycenaeans at Sudbourne Park
Etching and Aquatint

This was a lovely commission from a friend, who wanted a surprise present for her husband’s birthday. She told me that he was fascinated with the Minoans and Mycenaeans and somewhat of an expert in their art and, could I do something related to them in a print? She gave me a completely free hand which allowed me to mix my fascination with past cultures, with the location of their house which is situated in the very beautiful Sudbourne Park, in the depths of Suffolk.

Having discovered the superb map exhibition at the British Library earlier this year (2010), I couldn’t resist mixing Google’s aerial view of their house and elements of a 16th Century map housed in Orford Museum’s collection. This, together with the Minoan and Mycenaean art, much of which I was able to view whilst visiting the British Museum to research the project, was etched into a zinc plate to produce the final print.
