Head: as a result of the process
Head: Haiti, a fragment of grief
Bronze
2010

Head: as a result of the process was modelled in clay very simply and then put out in the melting snow, under drips from the gutter above. The sculpture that emerged was the result of the water shaping the clay, as well as the vagaries of the bronze pour which added some feathering into the mouth.

Head: Haiti, a fragment of grief was part of a head, modelled in clay, which I was unhappy with. It was also put out in the snow to see what would happen… it eventually fell off the armature breaking into pieces and one of these pieces is seen in this final bronze sculpture. The press coverage after the terrible earthquake in Haiti on 12 January 2010 was very intrusive and the pain, fear and grief of the people was hard to view; somehow the broken fragment is more manageable in its ‘glimpse of grief'.
