2004 and 2005 Bronze

Playing with words - light as a feather in this instance, has always intrigued me. The puzzle; which is heavier, a ton of feathers or a ton of metal? I could not deny that as a child I would have said the metal!

These were my first two attempts at trying to cast ostrich feathers and as can be seen they are not complete. I recognise now that I was still very much a beginner at bronze casting and had not prepared the feathers correctly for the bronze to pour the way it should, after the feathers had burnt out in the kiln.

However, I also recognise now, that the mistake I made has taught me how the bronze pour can be manipulated to run into a space, or not, plus – I rather like the incomplete sculptures.

The mistake turned out to be very positive.
